Chapter 11 Summary:
During this chapter Maniac Magee tried to flatten the crumpled page that he got back from Mars Bar as best as he could. Maniac couldn't stop wondering how he would beable to return the book in this shape back to Amanda. He didn't want to give it back but he had to because Maniac knew it was Amanda's and not his. She was very protective over her books. Maniac kept wondering what would make Amanda madder, giving her book back in this condition or not getting it back at all?
He took his time jogging around East End to find 728 Sycamore Street in no particular rush. This was where Amanda lived. As he was passing an empty lot he heard a familiar voice calling, " Hey, Fishbelly!" Just as he turned, he realized it was Mars Bar coming to get him. But it was't just Mars Bar either, it was him and a group of other kids. Maniac waited impatiently. They walked up to Maniac wondering where he was going. Maniac answered, "Nowhere." They thought that Maniac was running from them when he really wasn't. When Maniac kept denying that he wasn't running from them Mars reached for his book. However Maniac managed to move it away before Mars got it. They moved in on him and but this time there was no one around to help him. While they kept getting closer and closer to Maniac he hear a voice, "That you, Jefferey?" They all turned to see a girl near the curb on her bike. She leaped off and marched her bike over to them. It was Amanda. She saw the book and asked, "Who ripped my book?" Mars said, " He did." pointing at Maniac. They argued over who did it. Despite what they said Amanda didn't believe what Mars was saying because she knew that Maniac wouldn't rip her book. She was so mad that Mars would do such a thing that she yelled at him. She yelled at him explaining why she was so upset about how he ripped her book. Her reasons were because she has a little sister and a little brother that crayon all over her books, a dog who eats and poops on her books. But by the time she was finished talking Mars was already walking up the street past the basketball players who were rolling on the ground laughing.
Amanda turned and grabbed the page out of Maniac's hand stating, "It's one of my favourite pages." Maniac responds, "We can fix it." with a smile. Amanda invites Maniac back to her house and off they go.
